SOS: Signs of Suicide Training

September 22 @ 9:00 am - 11:30 am

Suicide is the second leading cause of death of young people in our country.

Recent Missouri legislation requires schools to allow suicide prevention as an acceptable subject for professional development hours. This law also requires that all schools have a suicide prevention policy in place, so this workshop could be especially helpful to school personnel.

This free workshop provides information about signs and symptoms of depression and suicidal thoughts. Participants will learn how to talk with a young person who might need help, and how to  introduce the SOS Program in their school, house of worship, or community.

SOS teaches youth to ACT (Acknowledge–that their friend has a problem, Care–clearly expressing to their friend that they care about them and they want them to feel better, and Tell–tell a Trusted Adult that their friend needs help). These same skills can be used by students who are themselves struggling with depression or suicidal thoughts.

Participants will be better equipped to serve as that Trusted Adult, and will learn more about how they can implement the SOS program directly with the youth population they serve.

If you have questions, please email Jeanne Cordingley.
